Over a 70 Year Legacy of Community Care
Affordable Housing and a longtime commitment to serving seniors and those in need in West Philadelphia
Located in West Philadelphia, we are a not for profit, Catholic Ministry of the Felician Sisters. Affordable housing is now provided through Angela Court and Francis House, and we are working to create additional community services to continue the legacy of Father John Mitchell, original founder of St. Ignatius Nursing Home and Blessed Mary Angela, foundress of the Felician Sisters, to provide support to those we serve.
Our commitment to our local community is to integrate the essential core values of the Felician Sisters: Respect for Human Dignity, Compassion, Solidarity with People in Need, Transformation and Justice and Peace.
“Being a resident of Francis House for the past three years I have found it to be a quiet, and peaceful community. The staff that works here are friendly and helpful. The rent is affordable - which is a key factor - and I have been enjoying the comfort since day one.”
– Kenneth M.
Learn More About How We Help
Our Felician Sisters ministry has allowed St. Ignatius Community Services to provide affordable housing to over 180 community members at a time with safe, secure and beautiful efficiencies and apartments.
We offer affordable housing at Angela Court and Francis House and are working on additional services as we have transitioned away from skilled nursing and rehab care. We hope to provide exceptional services to those who need it most.
In all, St. Ignatius Community Services will include:

Caring for the Greater Community
St. Ignatius Community Services is located in West Philadelphia. It has transformed from being a nursing and rehab center that was originally founded in the 1950's by Father John Mitchell, pastor of St. Ignatius Church, to become an affordable housing provider and will primarily serve as a navigator, and relationship-builder to bridge service gaps, connecting seniors in western Philadelphia with fragmented health and social services. In addition, the ministry will take on an innovator and collaborator role, creating new programs to address unmet needs where no suitable services exist for seniors. Father Mitchell saw a great need during his pastoral visits and established a personal care home run by parishioners and volunteers in a house next to his rectory. From these humble beginnings St. Ignatius Nursing Home grew into a long-term care and rehabilitation home serving over 500 residents yearly. The skilled nursing and rehab center is now owned by Allaire Health Services and is called West Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center while the affordable housing facilities, Angela Court and Francis House, are now under the umbrella of St. Ignatius Community Services and are still Felician Sisters’ ministries.

Who are the Felician Sisters and how are they involved?
The Felician Sisters of North America are a congregation of women religious, inspired by the spiritual ideals of their Foundress Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska and Saint Francis of Assisi. The Felician Sisters live in community, dedicating their lives to God and the Church—always striving to live and share the Gospel message through lives of prayer and service as they cooperate with Christ in the spiritual renewal of the world.
Blessed Mary Angela, who founded the order of the Felician Sisters in Poland in 1855, was inspired by the lives and spirituality of Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and Saint Felix of Cantalice, who were devoted to simplicity, prayer, and service to all in need. This model was adopted for the community life of the Felician Sisters.
Serving where needed since their arrival in North America in 1874, Felician Sisters have led the way in building the social service landscape.
Serving those in need, supporting refugees, providing education, fighting injustice, caring for the sick, sharing spiritual wisdom, empowering women, defending the planet, advocating for peace, fostering community and offering hope — by following Blessed Mary Angela’s direction to “serve where you are needed.”

Where are you located? What is the neighborhood like at your location?
Francis House is located at 46th and Fairmount Avenue and Angela Court is right next door in the same city block on the corner of 44th and Fairmount Avenue. Just a few years ago, St. Ignatius was surrounded by blight and vacant high-rise tenements. Today, we are part of a beautiful neighborhood renaissance in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia. It is in the “Promise Zone”, an initiative from the federal government that provides grants, federal investment and attention to our neighborhood to help break the cycle of poverty.
