Current Appeal

Dear Friend of St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center,

In 1952 St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center was founded by Father John Mitchell, a local parish priest who, while on parish visitations, saw first-hand the struggles of the very poor elderly.  Father Mitchell started a strong tradition whose mission was carried forward by the Felician Franciscan Sisters to help the poor elderly and infirmed of West Philadelphia.  Since then, thousands of individuals have passed through the doors of St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center, spending their last days in comfort, cared for and prayed for by the Felician Franciscan Sisters.

St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center has made many changes in recent years.  In 2012, a short-term rehab unit was built on our 2nd floor, and a beautiful solarium and healing garden on the 1st floor.  The short-term rehab has increased admissions and discharges.  Those patients receive therapy several times a day on our lower level.  We also created choice dining options, in which Residents select from a menu for each meal.  This year, we updated our auditorium which is frequently used by the Activities and Music Therapy departments.

All of these updated services and programs involve transporting our Residents by elevator.  Our 2007 appeal for elevator modernization resulted in the elevator shafts being completely rebuilt.  However, we recently learned we must replace the elevator control panels, as they are long past their life expectancy. With six floors, 176 residents, 22 of them short-term rehab patients, almost 200 staff members during a day shift and visiting family members, you can only imagine the workload and stress on our two elevators.  This past summer, we had several occasions where at least one elevator went down.  When this occurs, we must bring meals up to the floors as Residents cannot access the main dining room.  Large group activities, monthly parties and Music Therapy have to be done on the floors.  Almost all social activities, even just going outdoors to enjoy a beautiful day, have to be curtailed.  We still have daily Mass; however, only one elevator in use causes long waits and lines.

These elevator breakdowns are becoming more frequent, and fixing the problem will cause a huge strain on the St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center budget.  The company who originally installed the elevators has recommended new control panels for both elevators.  Typically control panels should be replaced every 10 to 12 years.  Our control panels were last upgraded in 1999 and are now over 17 years old.  We have attached the budget for our impending elevator repair.

We thank you so much for your kindness, generosity and support of St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center and hope that you will consider helping us with this expensive yet essential need to help our Residents.   God Bless
