Songs for the Spirit

The Activities Department has started a new music therapy program for our Residents entitled, Songs for the Spirit.  This program was set up and coordinated by music therapist Seth Laucks, MA, MT-BC, and is now led by Victoria Vitale, MA, MT-BC.  Both Seth and Victoria are master’s level clinicians in music therapy.  They are reaching out to our Residents through the power of music in an individualized way to attempt to break down the walls of depression, dementia, Alzheimer’s and other afflictions common in nursing home environments.  Victoria also provides emotional and psychosocial therapeutic support to each individual in this program.

Through Songs for the Spirit, Seth and Victoria aim to increase socialization and mobilization, improve mood and diet, and reach an overall improvement in Resident satisfaction and quality of life.  The program strives to alleviate loneliness and depression, and allows music to bring back a sense of identity as it awakens Residents’ stream of emotion and memory.

New iPods and various other musical devices will allow our Residents to enjoy the music that they have known throughout their lives.  An ever-expanding music library of Resident-preferred music has been purchased, and clinical assessments will be conducted to provide data to inform the success of the program.

Funds for this program have been provided by our donors and grants awarded by Felician Services, Inc.’s St. Francis Fund, Bright and Christella Erichson Foundation, and Dermody Properties.
