History of Events
Since 1991, St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center has been having charity fundraising events known for evenings of elegance, stars, and outstanding performances. In 1991, Ann Blyth and Bill Hayes starred in the original “Evening of Elegance.” Ann Blyth remained loyal to St. Ignatius, appearing in the next five Galas, and was honored at the 2001 Gala for her commitment to the Home and its Residents. Early events were orchestrated by John Gordon, the Development Director, with help from Norbert and Doreen McGettigan and Bishop DeSimone. Roseanita Coffey was the Chairperson for the first Galas, later joined by Eileen and Bud Hansen as Co-Chairs. The 2006 Charity Gala featured an outstanding performance by Italian tenor, Michael Amante. In 2008, the Gala featured Irish tenor Ronan Tynan, gold medal winning Olympian in the Para Olympics, physician, and international singing star. During the economic downturn, the venue was changed to the Annenberg Theater where the format was changed to a more informal event yet still maintained its identity and flavor of great entertainment and elegance. In 2009 home town favorite Bobby Rydell was our featured performer and in 2010 we welcomed Frank Sinatra, Jr performing his fabulous show “Sinatra Sings Sinatra.” In 2011, in collaboration with Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser event, we featured Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons at the Bellevue Park Hyatt for one of the best events in Philadelphia. We returned to the Annenberg Theater in 2012 and that year featured the legendary Dionne Warwick and our theme of “That’s What Friends Are For” fit perfectly
In 2013, we moved our event to the beautiful Temple University's Performing Arts Center. Our guests enjoyed the outstanding food our events have become famous for, after which they were wowed by the Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards. Temple provided the amazing venue again in 2014, when Michael Amante returned, captivating our guests once more.
In 2015 and 2016 the fundraiser was moved to the Haverford School and featured the Summer Club performers starring Jeff Coon. In 2017 the event was held at the Valley forge Military Academy with a great show starring the Upper Darby Performing Arts Summer Stage performers doing the musical show American Bandstand Revisited.
The 2018 and 2019 gala benefits were held at The Ballroom at Ellis Preserve and musical guests were the Soul Cruisers and the Ladies of Rock and Soul. The 2020 Gala had to be cancelled due to Covid so in 2021 we switched to an outdoor golf and reception event at Llanerch Country Club. We were blessed with a perfect weather day and all our guests were able to safely socialize in person outdoors.
Each gala has had its own unique theme and excitement, and continues to draw benefactor and sponsors to support St. Ignatius Nursing & Rehab Center.
